Training Maltese to Use Leash

Question

Hi,
How do I get my 4 month old Maltese Missy use to a dog leash? She wears a little harness which is ok, she likes that, but once I attach the leash she flips out! She thinks I'm playing tug-o-war with her. I want to get her use to a leash in case I need to use one on her. Please help!

Thanking you in advance!

Margie

Answer

Margie,
You should start by attaching the leash to her harness and letting her pull it around until she gets used to it. Reward her if she does not "flip out". Gradually pick up the end and call her to you. When she comes to you without objecting, reward her. This is a gradual process and should be approached with a great deal of patience.

Cocker Spaniel Won't Stop Going in House

Question

Dear Vet.,
Please help us, we have a very sweet female cocker spaniel named Bailey. She is a year and half old and we can not get her to stop using the potty in the house. We have tried everything, including rewarding her when she poops or pees outside. We can have her outside and she will pee and then come into the house and pee again on the carpet. We love her to death and she is so sweet, we just don't know what to do... Please help!

Jeff and Cyndi

Answer

Dear Jeff and Cyndi,
Crate training seems to be the best way to housetrain a puppy. Keep her in the crate at all times when you cannot watch her. Take her outside immediately upon removing her from the crate. Stay with her until she does her business. If she does not, put her back in the crate until she is ready. If she goes outside, reward her with a food treat or a clicker, which seems to be even more effective than food treats. If this fails, you may need to consult a behavior therapist.

14 Year Old Bichon Throwing Up Food

Question

My little lady (bichon) is about 14 + years old and has always had problems with digesting food. We have her on ID now and must place it in a blender and get it liquid so she won't throw it back up. Lately she does that anyway and has lost so much weight, she looks like a skeleton. Can you suggest anything we could add, any supplements that may bring her weight back?

Thanks,
Gloria

Answer

Gloria,
I am so sorry to hear about Lady. There are liquid, high caloric supplements that can be given to increase calorie intake. However, I would not do this until you speak with your veterinarian. Depending on her blood work results, one supplement may be more appropriate than another. The cause of the weight loss needs to be determined and addressed, if it has not already been.

Raw versus Cooked Dog Diet

Question

I am receiving a new puppy in a few weeks. He is currently being fed raw. I am trying to decide between doing both raw and cooking some. Pros and cons would be wonderful.

Thanks,
Nicki

Answer

Nicki,
I personally am not a fan of raw diets or of owners home-cooking, in general. The information that I receive from veterinarians around the country that work extensively with these patients indicate that they are not as healthy as dogs being fed a commercial diet. I cannot think of one single "pro". The "cons" include the fact that it is very difficult to correctly balance a diet of this nature, uncooked foods often contain parasites, which can be transmitted to humans, as well. It is very time-consuming for the owner and requires a great deal of research and diligence to formulate a correct diet.

Commercial dog food companies put years of research into their products and some are better than others, but in general, this is the healthier and much better overall choice to feed your pet.

Therapy for Poodle with ACL Surgery

Question

My 18 month old standard poodle had ACL surgery 3 weeks ago. He had 6 laser treatments (two a week) for three weeks. Can you give me advice as to therapy that I could do to rehabilitate him faster.

My vet said he is extremely healthy and has great bones and hips, freak accident, but I want him to be well and continue his athletic lifestyle.

I am considering putting him on a raw meat and veggie diet, I am apprehensive about all the meds after reading about how dangerous they can be by holistic vets.

Please advise,
Thanks so much,
Gail

Answer

Gail,
I am sorry to hear that your dog had to have surgery at such a young age. Hopefully his recovery
will be speedy and uneventful. You might want to talk to your vet about a glucosamine supplement to help to decrease the amount of arthritis that could form in that knee. I would also continue to give the anti-inflammatories that your vet has prescribed, as directed. The most important consideration regarding his diet is that he not be allowed to gain excessive weight.

Swimming is a low-impact way to exercise your pooch, but I would not begin any form of exercise until you clear it with the doctor that performed the surgery!

Good luck to you and your pup!

Poodle Won't Stop Scratching Herself

Question

Hi Dr.,
My 2 1/2 poodle/toy American Eskimow will not quit scratching herself. She scratches until she bleeds. I have had a cone over her head for over a month and now she has learned how to scratch her head and other places on objects around the house/yard. I've tried the anti-itch sprays. It started with a bad flea infestation. She has always been on Frontline Plus; however, this year, it didn't work. Even though she no longer has fleas, she keeps all the areas all chewed up. She looks horrible. I think it is time for a vet visit.

Thanks, Dr.
Kathie

Answer

Kathie,
It sounds like your dog may be allergic to fleas and it is definitely time for a visit to the vet. If Frontline is not working, there are newer products out that will control the fleas better. Also your dog will probably need a steroid and possibly antibiotics to break the itch cycle.

Good luck to you both!

Maltese Puppy in Sugar Shock

Question

Dear Dr. Jennen,
My 10 week old maltese puppy went through "sugar shock" yesterday. (my vet didn't tell me I had to feed her more then 2 times a day). I called the emergency vet and they told me to do the corn syrup thing on her gums and roof of her mouth and to log into a terrific website, Sharminspoodles.com/TeacupCare/html....Well it was very imformative and helped me out extremely. She responded after 15 minutes after giving her the corn syrup and then she was able to eat. She was still out of it for the next 8 hrs and then POW she was back on her feet again! My question to you is do I continue the corn syrup and for how long. I do not want my puppy to go through that again.

Sincerely,

Missy's Mom, Margie

Answer

Margie,
I am sorry that you went through such an awful experience with your new puppy. It would be much better to feed your puppy small meals throughout the day rather than giving her the syrup. If she shows signs of low blood sugar again, you should give her the syrup every 10 minutes or so until she responds.

Husky Pup Too Skinny and Digging

Question

Dear Dr. Jennen,
I have a four month old 1/2 siberian husky 1/2 wolf female puppy and she is a problem child! I can't seem to fatten her up and I'm not sure if that's due to the breeds or what. She also is a digger which I know is a breed trait and I need help with training tips as she is very strong willed and stubborn! Please help me!

Thanks,

Shawna

Answer

Debra,

As far as her weight is concerned you need to make sure that your pup is parasite free and on a
good large breed puppy food. There is no such thing as too thin, unless there is a medical problem
behind the failure to gain weight. As far as the behavior problems, you should find a good obedience trainer in your area to help you
 work with her.

Saying Goodbye to Pack Matriarch

Question

We had to have our old Rottiegirl euthanized a week and a half ago. I felt our mini-dachshund
was grieving normally as other dogs have - sleeping a lot ... going directly to Holly's favorite
snoozing spot when ever we came home. What I didn't expect was her reaction when we had to take Zahn (year old male rottie) into the vets to have porcupine quills removed. She became absolutely hysterical when we returned to the truck without him. We couldn't get her to stop barking or to settle down in our laps while we waited for the clinic to fit him into morning surgery. This barking was panic stricken, not at all her usual - and get this, home-made bickies didn't even get her attention!

She didn't react this way when we lost a male rottie last year; it was like the dogs knew he was
gone even before we made it to the vet.

So my question seems to be about helping Little Bit cope with the humans taking away a little
dachshund's beloved auntie Holly and not returning with her. It was a little scary - in all my years with dogs this is the first time this has happened.

May-be your thoughts on this can help others facing saying good-bye to a pack matriarch.

Suzanne

Answer

Suzanne,

I am sorry that your little dog is having such a hard time with this. Just like humans, dogs grieve in different ways and for different lengths of time, they just cannot verbalize their
feelings. Paying her extra attention and engaging in her favorite activities may help her get over
her grief. Sometimes getting a new puppy can alleviate this type (as well as other types) of
separation anxiety. Otherwise, the old adage, "time heals all wounds" applies here as well.

Will Dog's Glaucoma Get Better?

Question

My bichon doggie, who is 5 years old, was recently diagnosed with glaucoma in his right eye. It started with a slight cataract. He is now on eye drops three times a day. Will he ever get better? His eye pressure has come down some and it doesn't seem to bother him. We are so worried about him as he is such a good dog and companion.

Thanks,

Joelene

Answer

Glaucoma is generally not a condition that is reversible. If it started as a cataract that shifted and is blocking the drainage angle, there is a possibility that a veterinary ophtalmologist may be able to remove the cataract and offer some relief. If you are concerned about your dog's treatment, you should ask your veterinarian for immediate referral to an ophthalmologist.

12 Year Old Rott/Chow Limping

Question

I have a 12 year old Rott/Chow who is having a hard time getting around. She walks like her right back leg is bothering her, but she doesn't fuss or complain about it. She is getting to where she doesn't seem to see as well, her eyes are pale. My vet says this is normal. Is there anything I can
do or give her for her leg or her eyes? I have been giving her glucosomine that's in a tube and I apply it to her legs because she is always licking them, she doesn't like dirty feet. My dog-Lazy Ann is a house dog.

Thank you for any help that you can do.

Terry

Answer

There are several very good anti-inflammatories available for dogs. I believe that as pet owners we are responsible for keeping our pets out of pain as they get older. Dogs will not "fuss or complain" like a human would. They have to be in acute, severe pain before they vocalize. Limping
is your sign that she is hurting. Ask your vet to prescribe something for pain for her as soon as possible. X-rays of the hips and knees are very likely warranted, as well.

Yorkie Eating Fresh Poop

Question

I have a yorkie and she is 5 years old about a year ago out of the blue she started eating her own poop and only when fresh. Why and how do I get her to stop. Her breath is horrible! Please help!

Also she is always throwing up? What do I do?

Thanks,

Answer

I am so sorry about the problems that you are having with your little Yorkie. Poop eating can be a very frustrating problem. You should definately pick up the stools as soon as she produces them. If this does not stop the vomiting you should take her to your veterinarian as this can be a sign
of something serious.

Do Dogs Lose Their Baby Teeth?

Question

I have a 4 month old boxer and it looks like she has a canine tooth missing. Do dogs lose their baby teeth?

Thank you,

Answer

Ruth,

Yes, dogs do lose their baby teeth. Normally the canine teeth do not come out until they are around 5-6 months old, but she may be early. The adult canines should be completely grown in by the time she is 6 months old. Don't forget to keep her up to date on her vaccines and get her
 spayed!

Answer

Dohn,

It sounds like your little dog is a victim of allergies. Allergies are very complicated and can require a great deal of workup by a veterinarian. It could be mange or any number of skin conditions. Don't expect this to be resolved in just one visit to the vet. Keep on trying and eventually you will find products that will help you control your dog's skin condition, although am not familiar with DERMagic products specifically.

Dog Going Inside the House

Question

I adopted a shih-poo in Jan and am having problems with her going in the house. When I first got her she did go pee out side all the time. She will not go poop out side at all since i got her. She not goes pee inside also. She will spend all day out side with me and when she comes in she will go in the house. This is really turning me off. I purchased pee pads 2 days ago and has used it once. this is causing a lot of stress for me. Hope you can help me. Her name is Molly and is a very sweet girl and get much enjoyment with her. She is as cute as they come.

Thank you Carol

Answer

Carol,

I am sorry you are having such problems with your little dog. Housetraining can be very frustrating. The trick is to reward the behavior that you want (pottying outside) when it occurs. Keep her in a kennel or tied to your beltloop (so that she cannot sneak off and potty in the house) at ALL times. Take her out often and reward her when she does go outside. Eventually she will figure out what you want her to do. If she starts to go in the house while she is tied to you, pick her up and let her finish outside, then give her a reward.

Helping a Dog with Hair Loss and Sores

Question

I am doing volunteer work with rescue animals. One dog in particular has lost most of his hair and has sores all over his body. The rescue doesn't have much money. I was thinking omega 3's and other vitamins to help with inflammation. Is there hope for this dog to grow back his hair and help with his allergies? They have been to the vet to no avail. I am willing to buy what this dog needs. Can this be turned around? My thought is vitamins and nutrition. Please send me an e-mail if possible. I want to do something immediately to help this dog. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Gina

Answer

Dear Gina,

Although I am not familiar with this particular dog's case, from the information that you are giving me it sounds like he may have severe allergies (although he may have mange or some other
underlying problem). There is no cure for allergies, only management. This puts him in the "chronically ill" category. I realize that it is very tempting to want to do "everything possible" in these cases. However, you must realize that the cold, hard facts are that the shelters are euthanizing perfectly healthy animals at an alarming rate. If you adopt this animal out, you must disclose the condition that he is in now, even if he is looking very good at the time. This may make it difficult to find him a home. Your question to me was "Can this be turned around?" The short answer is, "Not permanently, but you could possibly help this dog feel better."

Dog Eats Its Own Poop

Question

I have a new dog and he has just turned 1 yrs old he eats his own poop and i trying to get him to stop how do I do it!

Thank you Charlet

Answer

Unfortunately the short answer to your question is probably "because he likes the taste of poop!" If he is on a good quality dog food the problem is more likely behavioral instead of medical. You can try putting tobasco sauce on the poop or putting MSG on his food. Both of these have been
reported to work in some dogs. This is usually a puppy behavior and they generally grow out of it, although not nearly soon enough!

Lhasa Apso Digs Furiously at Sheets and Carpet

Question

Hello Dr. Jennen!
I have a 9 yr. old lhasa apso who is a very quiet, even tempered great little guy, except for one little annoying thing that he seems to do almost every day.

"Tim" can be asleep in a chair, or in the middle of the night on top of my bed, and suddenly he'll bounce up, jump down to the floor and start furiously digging at the carpet, almost as though he's got to get to the floor underneath the carpet. Or he'll jump up on the bed to take a nap or go to sleep and start furiously digging at the sheet. I use knit sheets so he's already ripped through a few of those.

When he's performing this little ritual it's as though he can't hear me. I have to clap my hands loudly or physically touch him to get his attention or get him to stop. By that time he's halfway thru to China and at least down 3 sheets deep.

Not only is it annoying, but destructful too. I'm curious as to why he behaves this way, and more so, any suggestions as to how I can get him to stop?

Otherwise he's a perfect companion and pet!

Thank you!
Patricia

Answer

I am very sorry for the trouble you are having with your Lhasa. My first pet was a Lhasa and I had her all the way through college and vet school. She was a great companion as well.

Unfortunately, these little dogs were bred for protection and unless they have a job to do, sometimes they get bored, for lack of a better word. That is when obsessive-type behavior begins to manifest. You might try doing a search on the internet for "canine obsessive digging behavior."
I was able to find several good articles about this type of behavior. There are a myriad of reasons, which will dictate what should be done to curb the behavior. If all else fails you may need to enlist the help of a behaviorist or trainer to evaluate the situation. These dogs are very smart and like to perform. I taught my Lhasa several tricks that she loved to do and this helped with her behavior problems, which included digging in the trash and running off occasionally.

2 Year Old Cat Died Suddenly

Question

My neighbors cat just died - he just turned 2 years old on Christmas. He has always been an energetic kitten, friendly and healthy. He was up at 6:00am had something to eat, played for a while and then my neighbor found him (what she thought was asleep) on top of her washer where he laid looking out the window at birds at 10:00am... dead. There was no sign of anything being wrong. Is it possible for such a young cat to have a heart attack or stroke to end his short life? It was too costly for her to have an autopsy on him. Any suggested insight you might have to ease her mind would be greatly appreciated.

Kathryn

Answer

I am so sorry to hear about your neighbor's cat. The number one cause of sudden death in cats that I know of is heartworm infection. Often cats will show no signs at all and die suddenly. Sometimes there is vomiting, coughing, or asthma-type symptoms. If you are in an area that has a lot of mosquitoes, this increases the incidence of heartworm infection in both dogs and cats. If the cat was on a heartworm preventative (not a flea preventative), then the odds are against this. Young healthy cats do not have heart attacks or strokes for no reason. These are human conditions.

Why Do Dogs Roll in Smelly Things?

Question

I have a question about dogs. WHY on earth do dogs "roll" in the most despicable things? What is it about them that they want to smell so awful??? Thanks!

Jan P.

Answer

I think that dogs truly like the smell of the stuff they roll in (for the same reasons they sniff other dog's rear ends). I believe that they probably wonder why we spray that stinky stuff on us (perfume) that hurts their noses. In this case, it is a matter of opinion.

Feeding a Dog with UTIs Cranberries and Blueberries

Question

My Miniature Dachshund is struggling with UTI. We have had lots of tests and meds. I have switched her to moist food and taken away dry treats. Is it safe to give her cranberries and blueberries? I want to make her some treats with these ingredients, if it is safe. Thanks

Answer

I am so sorry to hear about your little dachshund. My guess is that she has been placed on a prescription diet. If this is the case it is probably contraindicated to feed anything else other than the prescription food. I am guessing that your goal is to acidify the urine with the cranberries. You should check with your veterinarian to see if this would be appropriate based upon her test results.

Yorkie Dominating Husband

Question

I have a yorkie and he is 12 years old . He is very cute but very demanding, of my husband especially . He doesn't let my husband stay on the computer or any length time. He barks till my husband gets on the floor so he can hump him. We could never break him of this. I want to know why he does this?

Answer

The short answer to this question is... because he can. It sounds like your little dog is trying to be the alpha male of the house. ANY positive response that he receives from dominance behavior ensures that it will be repeated. He should be placed in a crate out of earshot until your husband is good and ready to let him out. He should never be allowed to hump a human or dictate a human's behavior. Your husband should NEVER get down to his level. Getting on the floor for the dog to hump him is an act of submission and it's no wonder this dog is a little tyrant.

Your husband, especially, should begin obedience training with him immediately, preferably with the help of a certified trainer. If not, a good dog training book will suffice. Teaching him simple obedience skill will strengthen the dog/master bond and make for a much happier relationship for both of them. Letting him rule the roost will make him insecure and he will continue to test his boundaries until some are established for him.

Border Collie/Poodle Licking Feet and Rear Constantly

Question

I have a mixed breed border collie/poodle who is incredibly smart and talented. As her mom, I feel incompetent and unable to solve this problem....she licks her feet and her rear over and over again.

I have tried three vets, multiple medicines, steroid shots, food changes, stopping any chemicals on the lawn, etc. and she still does this.

I have been told it is atopic dermatitis, allergies, etc. The steroid shot stops the licking immediately, but the shot seems to wear off and I have heard it isn't good to give her shots frequently. I try not to have more
than 2-3 shots per year. Yet I feel horrible that I can't seem to fix the problem for her.

Right now I am trying Hills Prescription dry food plus a little canned food that is the Ultra allergy type and she seems a better but she also had a steroid shot and is taking fish oil capsules and an antihistamine and
another medication.

I try to do a lot of trick teaching and not having any treats to give her stymies that project. I had used treats, then just bread, then cheese, anything that might not bother her but now I have been told not to use
anything with her.

Do you have any help for me?

Thank you very much.
JSG

Answer

Atopic dermatitis can be very frustrating. It sounds like your pup may also have a food allergy component if she is responding to the low allergen diet. You are correct about the steroid injections. I would not allow them to be given at all. If a steroid is required (if she is self-mutilating) I would ask the vet to give her oral prednisone instead as the dose can be adjusted down to the lowest amount needed to maintain remission. Food allergies are not very responsive to steroids, so that would put it lower on the list. If she is licking the top of her rear end above her tail, she is probably also allergic to fleas, although you will not see them
because she will eat them as soon as they bite her.

Cyclosporine (Atopica) is a much safer product than a steroid and it sounds like it would definately be worth trying in her case. Call around and find a vet that carries it or is willing to order it for you, pay them a visit and ask them if it seems appropriate for her."

Good luck to you and your pup,

Trouble Controlling Fleas in Florida

Question

Hi,
We live in Florida and since there has not been a cold snap this year the fleas are very abundant. They are on everybody's pets. We have used commercial grade products on the yard to no avail; Frontline, Advantage, and more on the dogs and cats without success. I also have been to several vets in hopes for a solution. They too are having the same trouble with their own pets. Do you have any suggestions we can try?
Thank you!

Answer

The products that you mention are good products, but there seems to be some resistance developing to these topicals. Assuming that they are being applied correctly and the animals are not being bathed (which will remove both products to some degree) resistance may be the problem. There is a new product out for dogs called Comfortis. It is an oral product and is very safe and effective. This seems to be the most effective product out there right now. Regardless of whether you change products or not, you should continue with some type of flea control, because even if you are not able to achieve 100% flea control, you are probably keeping the population down with what you are doing.

Female Cat Obsessively Eating

Question

I have a 2 year old female siamese/tiger who lives with another female and a male cat. She is obsessed by eating and acts like a vulture over every other cat eating to make sure she gets anything left. I can no longer leave any food out- because she would eat it all, then throw up, and so forth. So I feed all my cats small portions over the times I'm home. She is starting to get chunky. I doubt she's hyper thyroid. She seems otherwise healthy. Any more suggestions?

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
The problem is either behavioral or medical. She needs a workup by a veterinarian to rule out
some kind of medical problem such as parasites. If it is behavioral, you will probably have to
continue to manage her as you have been.

Dog with Addision's Disease

Question

I have a question about my 1 year old Carolina dog. She has addisons disease she was diagnosed last May, at 6 mos of age. She has percorten inj every 25 days and is treated with predisone 25mgs 1 to 2x's a day. My question is this, she seems so tired after something as simple as a day in the park i started her on pet vitamins, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Lately, we are having more bad days than good.

If i cut back on her predisone she tends to get the irritable bowel, and becomes lethargic. It seems we cannot get this under control as she will have a few good days than, just like that, she is at the vet getting fluids, and a steriod inj. I
am so frustrated I have followed all instructions for her care to the tee. I was wondering if you had any suggestions, I have spent alot of money and am so frustrated, to still not have this under control. Her stress triggers seem to be many, at that time i will increase the 25mg predisone to two tabs a day. Everything i have read is the percorten inj and the predisone, and that's the treatment plan. There has to be something else, something being missed, as she is not the typical addisonian.

Please let me know if you know of another treatment plan i could try. I am exhausted, and frustrated, and feel have read and researched everything i can, and my vet, I feel has given up in a sense, kinda like "oh boy here comes lula again" and her narotic mom, and I always have a lot of questions, but I can't help her if I don't know. They say we treat the symptoms. Euthanasia has been mentioned and is not an option as I feel there is something else. I love her so much., and any suggestions you might have books, treatment ideas would be greatly appreciated.

.. Thank you for your time

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
I am very sorry that your dog is so sick. Unfortunately addison's is a severe disease and sometimes very hard to control. It sounds as if she is on the appropriate therapy for this disease, unfortunately sometimes treatment can be unrewarding. It is up to you and your vet to decide if her quality of life is good or not. If you are not comfortable with your veterinarian you should have her records sent to another one (word of mouth is always a good way to find a new vet) and see if you are more comfortable there. Perhaps there is an underlying reason that she is not responding to treatment, such as hypothyroidism, which is often found concurrently with addison's disease. I would ask your current (or new) vet to repeat bloodwork and make sure there is not another disease process in the works. She is awfully young to have such a debilitating chronic disease.

Good luck

Dog Likes to Chase Livestock

Question

I have three questions to ask you. I adopted a dog, Lady, about three weeks ago and she is 9 months old now. The animal shelter told me that the owner of Lady gave her up because of chasing livestock. Ok, I have to leash her all the time. How can I train her to stop chasing livestock? Our neighbors have horses and cows. Lady doesn't bark at the door (I am deaf) at all. Only when she sees something. Is it normal? keep her in the house, she loves to chew papers. I keep saying no no. She is a stubborn dog, but I love her to death. She is like my baby. Help me!!!

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Since Lady is a collie-you didn't say if she is a Border collie or a rough collie. Collies are herding dogs and their instinct is to herd livestock. Without training this can be chasing them
instead. Herding dogs need a lot of time spent with them to give them another job to do that is satisfying to them. That said, they will still want to go after livestock, so she needs a leash
until she can be taught to come off of the livestock when you call her. The not barking at the door is not unusual. A lot of dogs have other ways to tell you that they have to go outside. The chewing papers is a bad habit. Try some other toys and chew toys plus a lot of exercise. Lady will be a challenge to train since she has acquired a lot of bad habits. Stray Cats Spraying Deck

Question

I have a bunch of stray cats that I have been taking care of outside. A couple of them are spraying. What is a good product I can use on my decks to remove & eliminate them from doing it? I have seen many products in magazines & have read that the ones with enzymes in them not only get rid of the odor, but totally eliminate it. Have any suggestions?

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
I'm not sure what would be the best. I would check with several commercial cleaning companies.

Dog Eats Rocks

Question

Our dog is so hyper. He started eating all size rocks about 2 years ago. We thought he was bored. He started stretching and hunching a lot so took him to our vet. She did x-rays & some tests. Sure enough, he had some rocks in his stomach (colon). She operated & found 6 quite large stones. We kept them to remind us. We all also thought if we got him a friend, it would be for his benefit. She found us a darling female. It was ok for a while, then he would dig for rocks again. We're afraid we'll lose him if this continues. When he is out of the back yard with my husband, he doesn't do this. What should we do? Thank you.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
He may be bored and is looking for something to entertain himself. Some dogs are bad about eating foreign things-not just rocks either!

Black Lab/Border Collie with Irritated Eyes

Question

Hello, I have a Black Lab/Border Collie named Sassy. She is our pride and joy and ahe has had a rough go of it in this life with Hip Dysplasia, But she sails right on through and Loves Life. Anyway, a couple of months ago we noticed her eyes were looking pretty red around the bottom skin. We have very little finances since we were both laid off and haven't been able to go to a vet because of the prices out here. We have been trying to use Eye drops to see if this helps. My Husband thinks it is something in her system causing this, but I thought I would see if you could help. I will attach a Picture of Sassy for You to see her Eyes. We Just Love Her So Much, and She is Our Family. Thank you so much for your time.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
The picture just tells me that her eyes are irritated. That could be for a lot of reasons. She needs to see a veterinarian!!

Older Rescued Poodle with Severe Allergies

Question

Hi, I rescued a poodle almost 3 years ago. She was found wandering the streets. At first, it was thought that she was lame, but it turned out that she had been so neglected, her hair was all matted and knotted between her legs. She was obviously abused. She has a terrible allergy to what, we don't know. My vet gave her on steroids, etc. to no avail. She itches all the time and chews at herself. The smell is unbearable when she does this. Her teeth, which I brush often, are rotted but they can't be removed because of her age (unknown, but they're sure she's very old). I've used Head and Shoulders and every medicated dog shampoo you can think of. I even watch her diet. Her skin is flaky and parts of it by her belly looks like elephant skin. I use a conditioner. Do you have any suggestions to help this poor little girl? She is the sweetest, most loveable pet I have ever had. She is now deaf and blind, but gets around the house just fine and her little tail is always wagging. Thanks for any information that you can give me.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
She needs to see a veterinarian. If your vet did not help and could only suggest steroids find another vet. If her teeth are infected they need to be taken care of. There are protocols that can be followed for older dogs to do this.

Using Dog Flea Product on Ferrets

Question

My son has two neutered male ferrets that he keeps in his room and lets out as often as he can. He and his children take them outside to play in the grass in the yard and occasionally to the flea market or the beach on leashes. His problem is that they seem to have fleas. He was told that you can use the dog flea product that you put on their shoulder blades in a much smaller dose. Like the smallest dose divided between the two of them. He hasn't been able to get a vet to tell him exactly how to do it and so he is hesitating to try it in case it might make them sick - or worse. Can you give us any information on it. I even called Bayer who makes one of the products and they told us to ask a vet. I realize it is off label use but is it possible to use on ferrets? We don't want to do anything to hurt them but we don't want them to have fleas either. Thanks for any help you can give us.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Anything you use on the ferrets is off label. You need to see a veterinarian that sees ferrets regularly and get their recommendation for what to use.

Boston Terrier Won't Lose Weight

Question

Hello, My name is Lindsey and I have a boston terrier that will be 2 in may. She weighs about 35 pounds and does not look that big. I know she should not weigh more than 20 to 25 pounds. We have her on light dry dog food and only give her 1.5 cups of food a day and the amount she should get is between 2-3 cups a day. We give her half a cup for breakfast, half a cup for lunch, and half a cup for dinner but she is not losing weight. She is very tall for a boston terrier also. I know some of the weight gain could be cause it is/was winter and did not get very much excersize but even in the summer she still did not lose any weight. Can you help me find a great kind of dog food that will help her lose some weight? And also is it bad that we only give her one and a half cups of food a day instead of what she should be getting? We do not feed her any human food neither. Can you please help I don't know what to do.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Weight gain can also be caused by metabolic problems (particularly thyroid) so I would have her checked for these problems. She may also need a more restricted food. Your veterinarian can help you.

Cats Throwing Up

Question

Hello I have two cats that are about 8 yrs old. They are in really good health, but Misty has the biggest problem. After she eats she throws up, and the food looks like she didn't even chew it.She has been doing this for a while. Maggie doesn't do it very often, but in the last week she has done it twice, and when she throws up it's just liquid. Its really being a problem and I don't know what to do about it. Thank you.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Misty may be eating too fast and when the food sits for a little while it enlarges with liquid and then she throws it up. If Maggie is throwing up clear liquid something else is going on and it need to be checked by your veterinarian.

Worming a Nursing Dog

Question

Can you worm a dog that has just had puppies, and is still nursing them?

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
There are wormers that are safe for pregnant and nursing moms. They have to be given in the proper dose and given for the correct parasites. (There is no "gets everything" worm treatment). Many people do not know that some wormers could harm the puppies and mom. That is why they need to consult with their veterinarian.

Making Life Comfortable for a 13 Year Old Poodle

Question

My Coco is going to be 13 and I have never had her spayed. She has had 2 litters 1st at age 4 and 2 years later another. She had 11 very healthy babies. I have never mated her since. Is it ok if I don't spay her? Also she has a cough almost gagging that at times is worse than others. She doesn't have anything come up but my vet said to give her Robitussen for 3 days (1/8) and she was good but I also know poodles are famous for throat problems. She is a mini at 12 lbs and seems more like a puppy. Anything I should be doing for her. She has eaten Purina all her life but seems to want softer food now but her teeth are good never lost any. I just want to make sure I am doing everything to make her adult life comfy and healthy.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
It would be an excellent idea for CoCo to have a thorough physical exam. At 13 years of age there are a lot of problems that she could have that are not showing themselves yet! She needs a blood panel to check for anemia, low grade infection, kidney and liver function. It would be a good idea to have a chest XR to make sure she does not have any serious heart or lung problems since she has that cough. As far as the spay, a lot of older female dogs will have "female" problems as they get older and when they occur they can be life threatening very quickly. A spay would eliminate that possibility. Her teeth need to be thoroughly checked also-at her age teeth root and gum infections are very common and need to be taken care of. I would consult your veterinarian about all of this!

Yorkie with Skin Growths

Question

I have an 8 yr old female yorkie whom I rescued from someone who was physically and mentally abusing her and this same person rescued this dog from the original owner who was starving her. About a yr ago she was fixed and had some tumors removed but thank God they weren't cancerous.

But now I've noticed that she has a very small growth on the top of her head and on the outer part of one of her thighs. they seemed to be very hard and feel like a pimple but they won't pop and they don't ooze. Could these be tumors? I'm so scared of taking her back and hearing bad news. You see I love this dog because she is a survivor like me, she gives me so much love and I in return have tried to give her some kind of peace, love and tranquility.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Take her back and have her checked!! If they are cancerous they need to be removed as soon as possible. If you wait then they could be a very serious problem. Or they may not be a problem at this time and not be cancerous. Have it checked out!

Dobe Puppy with Growing Pains

Question

I have a 6 mo old Dobe puppy with severe leg pain. Had him x-rayed. Vet says growing pain. Can this be true and what can I do for him other than pain meds...

Dear Pet Owner,
There are several conditions that young growing large breed puppies can develop that cause severe pain at times. Since your veterinarian XR'd your pup they would be the best one to ask this question of. The type of problem present makes the choice of pain medication clear.

English Sheepdog with Mild Anemia

Question

I have an older large breed dog (ten years old, Old English Sheepdog). He has a heart problem, and takes medication to control it. He's also on meds for arthritis in his knees. He's been on that for much of his life (chronic problems from a very young age), but he's managing well. Recently our vet said that he is very mildly anemic and that it isn't anything to be worried about. I certainly wouldn't want to medicate him unnecessarily, but was wondering if there is anything diet based that might help with the anemia. Any suggestions?

Thank you very much,
Tracie Scott

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Mild anemia in an older animal is not unusual and if he is doing ok otherwise, don't worry about it-just continue to monitor it.

Cat Stalked by Another Cat

Question

I have a 15 lb cat (Lilbit -female) that I found as a stray and adopted. That was September 05. In October 06 I found another little cat (Maji-female) 7lbs. Maji had been beaten up pretty badily, had a puncture wound in her head, multiple bites and scratches when I got her. Also the kids in the neighborhood had been chasing her b/f I was able to catch her.

While she was in quarantine I let Lilbit sniff and all that that you are supposed to do for a successful introduction. Unfortunately... it didn't work. Lilbit stalks and attacks Maji every chance she gets. I've tried everything... including medications. We've tried locking Lilbit in a room, (which she doesn't seem to mind), I spent nearly a year sitting on the bathroom floor w/ the both of them giving them treats side by side. (When food is near Lilbit can tolerate her!), and amitryptiline (spelling) and prozac. When on the medications, the attacks are lessened due to Lilbit sleeping so much... but it doesn't stop. She will still attack.

Now Maji is VERY submissive and I think that is part of the problem b/c another little kitten found me this past September and when Lilbit hissed at him... he just looked at her and continued to play with her! They are now the best of friends. I also have 1 other female and another male that for the most part Lilbit doesn't mess with them either. Maji actually lives in our couch for the most part because she is so scared of Lilbit. We've thought of getting rid of one or the other... but I can't really bear that. I would always worry about Lilbit and Maji is so attached to me that I worry how she would adjust.

Thank you for any advice,
From a very stressful household
Kelly

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
It sounds like a stressful situation! In some multi cat households this situation occurs. Cats are not very sociable creatures with each other-they are more solitary. Sometimes medication will help, sometimes some behavior training. In my experience at times nothing helps long term. I would talk with a behavior specialist and go from there.

Rottie Peeing in the House

Question

Hi,
I have a four year old rottie who is constantly peeing in the house. He is ruining our carpets and the wood on our stairs. He will even do it when he has access to the outside. He knows that he is doing wrong because as soon as we notice it he runs and hides. He is not neutered and is home alone during the day. He is an indoor dog and is very spoiled. Any help you can give us would be appreciated.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
This may be a male dog behavior issue in which case neutering will help. It may be a way for him to "get back" at you for leaving him alone all day. He may also have a urinary tract infection and not be able to hold it long enough to get outside. You need some help from a veterinarian first and possible a trainer after that.

Cat with Diabetes

Question

Hello,
I just had one of my 6 cats diagnosed with Diabetes. What are some other alternatives to the insulin. Diet changes??? that I might make at home. Does Chromium help and if so how much would I give a 10 lb cat and how often.

Many thanks for your time
Terry M.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Unfortunately there are no alternatives to insulin with a cat with diabetes. They do not respond to the oral diabetic medications that people take. There are 2 special foods for diabetic cats that help with diabetes but they are not a substitute for insulin. Chromium does not help.

Stray Cat with Possible Cold

Question

Dr. Baeyens,
I have a stray cat that I have been feeding for weeks now. He shows signs of having a cold. He sounds very congested, sneezing out green mucus. Is there any human medicine over the counter that I could get that would help him breathe easier?

Thanks.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Cats are very likely to get sick from a virus that causes these symptoms. Do not give any human medication-cats are very sensitive to a lot of medications that people (and dogs) can take without problems. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian.

Shih Tzu with Dry Skin

Question

I have a beautiful little shih tzu who has very dry skin on her back. What can I do to help her with this problem? I feed her Iams dog food and give her only Iams treats. I do not give her people food. She drinks lots of water. I feel so bad for her because she digs at it all the time and the condition is very flakey. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Diana

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Without seeing her I can only make some assumptions-it sounds like she may have a skin allergy and is itching excessively. There are medications for this, sometimes allergy testing is needed to see what she is sensitive too. You are feeding her correctly. Make sure that she does not have fleas and is treated for them properly. She may also have some infection in her skin. She needs to visit her veterinarian to get the proper treatment for this condition.

Chihuahua Biting the Family

Question

Dr. Baeyens,
I have a longhaired Chihuahua that was 2 yrs. old July 1, 2007. Sammy is very lovable most of the time. Being raised with friends dropping in to visit us quite often he loves people. My problem is, in the last 6 months he has bitten me three times, my husband three times, my son twice and my daughter-in-law once (they live with us). He doesn't growl or show any signs that he doesn't like something he just bites and growls at the same time. Now, he has never broken skin but there are teeth marks and redness, it does hurt.

As a young child I was attacked by a large growling dog and still fear most dogs, I can't give Sammy the attention he wants because of this. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this problem? Trainers that I've talked to say he's too old now to help. Any help you can share will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Emily Morris

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Sammy is not too old to be helped. He needs to see a trainer that works with a dog behavior specialist (there are veterinarians who specialize in animal behavior). If he is not neutered that also needs to be done. He is trying to be the alpha dog in the house-and he is not-you are!! Chavez, the dog whisperer, also has some good books out that may help you.

Great Dane Puppy Losing Hair

Question

I have a Great Dane puppy and he's losing his hair, only on his face. What should I do about it? And he looks like he has dandruff. He is an outside dog. Is that what is causing the problem? I have 4 other dogs. They don't have any hair loss. Just Duke. Should I keep him on adult food or change it to puppy food? Please let me know as soon as possible.

Very concerned pet owner

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Your puppy may have a type of mange that Great Danes are susceptible to. He needs to be checked by your veterinarian. The type of problem that it sounds like Duke has is only a puppy condition, and is not contagious to the other dogs But he needs to be seen and treated so it does not lead to further serious conditions. He can eat adult food at this point, as long as it is good quality dog food-not generic store brands.

German Shepherd Has Reaction to Allergy Meds

Question

Good morning,
I have a full blooded white german shepherd. She is 8 1/2 yrs old and has been suffering with an ear infeaction. I have taken her to the doctor. I have cleaned her ear out as much as I could. I want to find something natural to try to help her. The one vet told me to give her allergy meds to dry it up. She had a reaction that scared me. It was almost like a small stroke.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Ear infections can be very frustrating to treat and keep cleared up. German Shepherds are one of the breeds that have a lot of ear problems. A culture may need to be done to see what kind of bacteria is causing this infection. Sometimes a yeast or fungal infection can also be involved. There are not any good "natural" products out there to help with ear infections. If keeping the ear clean is not helping then you need to visit your veterinarian again. Allergies can also contribute to ear infections, and again since she had a problem with medication do not give any more medication without seeing your veterinarian.

Schnauzer Doing "Business" on Furniture

Question

Dear Dr. Baeyens,
I have 4 dogs living with me in my home. 3 schnauzers and 1 yorkie. all four get along well, all four are housetrained. one female schnauzer is 18 yrs., one female schnauzer is 8 months, one male schnauzer is 9 months, and the yorkie is a 7 year old female. My problem is with the male schnauzer, he constantly raises his leg on furniture even after just coming in from outside and doing his "business". I try to monitor him, scold him and put him outside to reinforce the fact that all "business" is only done outside. He is a rescue and I have had him since he was 4 months, he was removed from a home where the young children were too rough with him. He is a delightful pet and seems to like being with me and the other dogs. How can I break this bad habit?

Thank you for your response,
Sally in Pensacola

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
The first question I have for you on the little "bad boy" schnauzer is-is he neutered?? If he is not, he has reached the age where he is marking his territory. That is a normal state of affairs for young male dogs-especially in a multi dog household. If he is not I would get that done ASAP. If he is neutered, then he needs some behavior training on learning his manners!!
