Cat with Diabetes

Question

Hello,
I just had one of my 6 cats diagnosed with Diabetes. What are some other alternatives to the insulin. Diet changes??? that I might make at home. Does Chromium help and if so how much would I give a 10 lb cat and how often.

Many thanks for your time
Terry M.

Answer

Dear Pet Owner,
Unfortunately there are no alternatives to insulin with a cat with diabetes. They do not respond to the oral diabetic medications that people take. There are 2 special foods for diabetic cats that help with diabetes but they are not a substitute for insulin. Chromium does not help.
