Trouble Controlling Fleas in Florida

Question

Hi,
We live in Florida and since there has not been a cold snap this year the fleas are very abundant. They are on everybody's pets. We have used commercial grade products on the yard to no avail; Frontline, Advantage, and more on the dogs and cats without success. I also have been to several vets in hopes for a solution. They too are having the same trouble with their own pets. Do you have any suggestions we can try?
Thank you!

Answer

The products that you mention are good products, but there seems to be some resistance developing to these topicals. Assuming that they are being applied correctly and the animals are not being bathed (which will remove both products to some degree) resistance may be the problem. There is a new product out for dogs called Comfortis. It is an oral product and is very safe and effective. This seems to be the most effective product out there right now. Regardless of whether you change products or not, you should continue with some type of flea control, because even if you are not able to achieve 100% flea control, you are probably keeping the population down with what you are doing.

Thank you for your question,
